But the power of AI isn't only being wielded to make chatbots. In fact, it has been quietly helping us solve many of our biggest problems for decades, and now even looks set to provide fresh impetus in the quest to achieve commercially viable nuclear fusion power. One company that has consistently shown a knack for solving real-world problems is Google's DeepMind. One of its most surprising achievements has been in protein folding. Determining the crumpled shapes of proteins based on their sequences of constituent amino acids had been a persistent problem for decades, with researchers often taking years to solve a single one. DeepMind transformed biology last year by announcing that it had predicted the structure of nearly all proteins known to science in just 18 months. The team had trained its AI AlphaFold on data from known protein shapes and it learned to predict what the unsolved proteins would look like. The benchmark index is currently valued at 21x forward price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio, even after a 2.4% decline last week. For comparison, the index has, on average, traded at a forward P/E of 19x over the past seven years when inflation was running at 3%, according to Niles, who manages The Satori Fund. The renowned market bear said he sees several macroeconomic headwinds that make valuing the S & P 500 at current levels "much more difficult." "It wouldn't surprise me to see a 10% correction between now and year-end," the portfolio manager told CNBC's "Squawk Box" Friday. Continued here The AI Regulation Paradox - Foreign Policy    While former U.S. President Donald Trump's third indictment includes a charge of spreading "pervasive and destabilizing lies about election fraud," we can rest assured that this will be followed by a fresh avalanche of disinformation. After all, Trump has already been on a roll for the upcoming election season. Ron DeSantis, who is challenging Trump for the 2024 Republican ticket, tweeted out a video advertisement featuring artificial intelligence-generated images of Trump kissing and hugging Anthony Fauci, the former chief medical advisor to the president, who is reviled by the far right. Meanwhile, "I actually like Ron DeSantis a lot," confesses former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in yet another fake video that went viral.
