A 32-year-old psychology grad student in Michigan, Kathryn lived with endometriosis, an agonizing condition that causes uterine-like cells to abnormally develop in the wrong places. Menstruation prompts these growths to shed—and, often, painfully cramp and scar, sometimes leading internal organs to adhere to one another—before the whole cycle starts again. For years, Kathryn had been managing her condition in part by taking oral opioids like Percocet when she needed them for pain. But endometriosis is progressive: Having once been rushed into emergency surgery to remove a life-threatening growth on her ovary, Kathryn now feared something just as dangerous was happening, given how badly she hurt. It’s a concept known as “psychological safety,” which is simply about avoiding interpersonal harm at work—like feeling confident taking risks or admitting when you don’t know the answer—without worrying you’ll be judged or disparaged.  The case for psychological safety, Cappelli has found, is “a lot narrower” than most would expect, especially given the recent emphasis on belonging and comfort at work. But work is, ultimately, a business, and the psychological safety of a “no bad ideas” culture might confuse people into thinking poor performance carries no consequences, he says. In the published paper, he defined these feelings of “psychological safety” as the “shared belief that one is free to take interpersonal risks on a team—such as asking for help or revealing mistakes—without any resulting negative consequences.” But companies tend to take it too far when they leave employees without any feeling of responsibility for poor work. The terrorist group’s October 7 attacks resulted in the deaths of more than 1,300 Israelis, injuries to thousands more, and the seizure of some 150 hostages; most of those killed, injured, or abducted were civilians. The attacks also raised the question of how Hamas can be deterred from carrying out similar attacks in the future. But just because an objective is understandable does not mean that pursuing it is the optimal or even advisable path, and Israel’s apparent strategy is flawed in both ends and means. Hamas is as much a network, a movement, and an ideology as it is an organization. Its leadership can be killed, but the entity or something like it will survive. Israel has begun airstrikes on Gaza, and there is a good deal of evidence that it is preparing for a large-scale land invasion. This puts Washington in a difficult position. The Biden administration is correct in supporting Israel’s right to retaliate, but it must still try to shape how that retaliation unfolds. The United States cannot force Israel to forgo a massive ground invasion or to curtail one soon after launching it, but U.S. policymakers can and should try. They should also take steps to reduce the chances the war will widen. And they must look beyond the crisis, pressing their Israeli counterparts to offer Palestinians a viable peaceful path to statehood.
