Think about how many texts and alerts and notifications and work emails and personal emails and news headlines and fly-by tickers and blog feeds and Twitter spews and Instagram comments you’re reading each day. To read more books, you need to cut some of that out of your life. Start by making your phone less addictive. Put your phone in greyscale mode. Move all of the apps off the main screen so it’s blank when you open it. Leave your cracked screen cracked. Unfollow all of the news. And don’t read on a device that can do other things.  Reading real books, on paper, lets you be the full director of the show. No voice replaces your mental voice, no formatting or display screen affects the artistic intentions of the writer. No notices or alerts distract you from taking a deep dive into the text. The benefits of reading more are clear: Reading triggers our mirror neurons and opens up the parts of our brains responsible for developing empathy, compassion, and understanding. Reading makes you a better leader, teacher, parent, and sibling. So keep turning the page. The quiet, controlled environment of home offices has conditioned us to work in silence, free from the constant hum of office chatter, ringing phones and clattering keyboards. This shift has made us more susceptible to distractions when we return to the traditional office environment. The brain is a highly adaptable organ, constantly changing in response to our environment and behavior, a phenomenon known as neuroplasticity. When we work from home, our brains adapt to the quieter, less distracting environment. We become more attuned to the subtle sounds of our home surroundings — the hum of the refrigerator, the ticking of a clock, the chirping of birds outside the window. These sounds become the backdrop of our workday, and our brains learn to tune them out, allowing us to focus on our tasks. Because they’re afraid of exposing their flaws or struggles. But this is such a missed opportunity to connect with your audience. Instead of keeping your most impactful stories hidden, dig them up and use them. Start by thinking through the nouns that are important to you — the people, places, and things that have shaped your life. Chances are that you’ll find a number of stories buried in those memories. Then write one-line summaries of the stories and catalog them; you could sort them by situation, theme, mood, or moral. When you’re looking through your bank of stories to find one that is right for your next talk, consider who’s in your audience and what they care about. Carefully consider their values, goals, and interests, and then decide which of your stories fits them best. When I ask executives what their favorite speech is, Steve Jobs’s Stanford commencement address is always at the top of the list. Many think of Jobs’s talk as their favorite because it is incredibly moving — thanks to the stories it contains. Continued here
