Heres why we need to start thinking of AI as normal
Right now, despite its ubiquity, AI is seen as anything but a normal technology. There is talk of AI systems that will soon merit the term superintelligence, and the former CEO of Google recently suggested we control AI models the way we control uranium and other nuclear weapons materials. Anthropic is dedicating time and money to study AI welfare, including what rights AI models may be entitled to. Meanwhile, such models are moving into disciplines that feel distinctly human, from making music to providing therapy.

How Duolingo Aims to Diversify Beyond Language Learning
Launched in 2011, Duolingo grew into the most downloaded education app in the world. By late 2024, it boasted 100 million monthly active users, 8 million paid subscribers, and a market capitalization approaching $15 billion. The success stemmed from a gamified approach to learning, use of adaptive AI technology, and alignment of incentives: maintaining a streak on the app not only helped users master a language but also drove subscription growth and reduced costs.

Turbulence at the Airport - The New Yorker (No paywall)
Turbulence at the Airport
When Juan joined the Transportation Security Administration, or T.S.A., about seven years ago, he wasnt sure how long he could afford to stay. He was assigned to staff the screening checkpoint and inspect bags at Palm Springs International Airport, an indoor-outdoor facility at the foot of the San Jacinto Mountains, a few hours drive east of Los Angeles. He had thought that any position within the federal government would provide stability and a living wage, but he was given only part-time hours. His pay was so low that he had to live with his parents and work a second job. His supervisors seemed eager to write him up for small mistakes. All that grief just to be a meat shield, he said. He was trained on the floor in Palm Springs and at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center in southeastern Georgia, alongside Border Patrol agents, corrections officers, and F.B.I. officers. Even there, the T.S.A. was something of an ugly-stepchild agency, Juan, whose real name Ive withheld for privacy, told me.
