They raise funds in the hundreds of millions or billions of dollars, usually from the partners themselves and limited partners, or LPs, who might include wealthy individuals and pension funds. Since 2020, Sand Hill Road's most successful individuals have broken away on their own to raise capital for their micro-funds. Europe, often a few years behind when it comes to startup trends, is also starting to produce its own solo GPs. Notable new solo GP funds in Europe include Gloria Baeuerlein's Puzzle Ventures; Jobspotting cofounder Robin Haak's Robin Capital; ex-Googler Sarah Drinkwater's Common Magic; and 20VC, founded by Harry Stebbings, who announced in 2021 that he had raised $140 million to be used across a duo of funds. But Greek shipowners have discovered an apparently even more lucrative source of revenue: selling the ships themselves to mysterious buyers linked to Russia. One publication has declared that a "Great Greek Tanker Sale" is taking place, and no price seems too high for a secondhand tanker. But the formerly Greek ships are entering a Hades-like shadow economy. Greek companies don't rule many sectors of the globalized economy, but they certainly dominate shipping. Last year, the country was once again the world's largest shipowner by deadweight tonnage. Then Russia invaded Ukraine, and Western governments ramped up their sanctions. Greek shipowners didn't like it. "Sanctions have never worked," Greek shipping magnate George Prokopiou told a maritime event crowd last June. Continued here
